Mogadishu, Somalia 4, June, 2025:- The Somali Women Peace and Security Centre (SWPSC) convened a critical public dialogue in Mogadishu focusing on the role of Somali women in the upcoming one-person, one-vote elections. The event brought together women from various sectors of society, including academics, medical professionals, university students, and civil society actors.
The forum served as a platform to openly discuss the barriers and opportunities surrounding women’s political participation in Somalia. Participants explored how women’s involvement in elections can be strengthened through increased awareness, political education, and legal protection.
A key guest at the event, Chairman of the National Independent Electoral Commission, Mr. Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, engaged directly with participants, responding to questions about women’s representation and how fair inclusion can be ensured in the electoral process.
The discussion emphasized the urgent need to empower Somali women to play a more visible and influential role in elections and democratic governance. Recommendations included enhancing civic education, addressing structural barriers, and ensuring legal guarantees for women’s political rights.
